Hook-up culture on campus
I found Freitas' research about the hook-up culture on today's college campuses both eye-opening and disturbing. If you haven't read the USC interview with her yet, check it out at http://www.uscatholic.org/life/2008/10/sex-lies-and-hook-culture . What are people's experiences with this issue? Does what she talks about ring true on your campus? And how are students dealing with it?

I've heard the stories about "hooking-up" now for a while but this article brought home to me several concepts that I hadn't realized before. One was the fact that today's kids either don't know how to date or feel that the concept is foreign to their culture. The second surprise was how totally unprepared college kids were for interacting with today's college lifestyle. Parents and churches need to be better informed regarding the behavior on college campuses so that they can equip young adults for what lies ahead. One of the advantages evangelicals have is a strong local church support structure providing kids away from home with opportunities to socialize outside of the hook-up culture. They will reinforce strong ethics and a commitment to biblical principles through active youth groups and frequent activities. Cultivating good leaders from among our youth who can teach and model lives vastly different from those caught up in the hook-up culture needs to become a top priority. By teaching and demonstrating respect for everyone perhaps these young leaders can successfully encourage our children to once again date responsibly and refrain from the romance-free arrangements prevalent today.
