Pius XII, pray for us?
The normal staid process of becoming a saint has erupted into a holy war in the case of Pius XII, the pope during World War II, whom many blame for being silent in the face of the Holocaust. The case is causing an interreligious row between some Catholics and Jews, yet some in the Vatican are urging Pope Benedict to put Pius on the road to beaitification. See my blog post on the issue:
http://uscatholic.org/blog/2008/10/holy-war-over-war-time-pope as well as Catholic News Service's coverage: http://www.uscatholic.org/news/2008/10/scholars-ask-pope-put-pius-xiis-sainthood-cause-hold
If you were Pope Benedict, would you advance Pius XII another step to the altar?

What purpose would it serve to canonize him? He's a divisive historical figure. To some, it would mean a sainted compassionate negotiator. To others, it would be a sainted Nazi sympathizer. Is the purpose of declaring sainthood for the sake of the saint of for the Church? I can't see it doing him any good and it would just drive another wedge into the Church.
