Prenatal testing

The preselection technology that will advance the future's construction of the perfect child already exists. Prefertilization genetic screening and prenatal testing have instituted a de facto "quality control" filter into the process of human reproduction, says Jeannie Hannemann, a family life minister and one of the founders of the Elizabeth Ministry, an international mentoring service for women during pregnancy.

Humanity professor

Jean Vanier offers a simple summary of the purpose of the small community he began in 1964: "The secret of L'Arche is relationship: meeting people heart to heart; listening to people with their pain, their joy, their hope, their history." Harder to describe are the profound effects of life together on L'Arche's members, both the developmentally disabled "core members" and the "assistants" who care for their needs.

Death-it's a part of life

Myles Sheehan has two jobs that cause him to walk with death on a regular basis: One, he's a doctor specializing in the care of old people; two, he's a Jesuit priest. He's also an Irish Catholic from Boston, where wakes constitute a hefty portion of one's social activities from childhood onward. So it isn't altogether surprising that when he speaks about what makes a good death, people listen.

Men and abortion

"The clinic was a very cold place. We spoke to a counselor who asked us if we felt that we knew what we were doing. They told me it would be better if I left and came back to pick her up later. So I went out to get some air. I found out later that she'd had second thoughts and come out looking for me. But I wasn't there. So she went ahead with the abortion. That was the hardest thing because I wasn't there when she needed me."

Walking to Alabama's death chamber with his friend changed Father Sebastian Muccilli's life. He writes of his hope that Darrell Grayson's story may change our attitudes about the death penalty as well.
