The pleasures and dangers of religion

Thursday, August 28, 2008
A new study suggests that burning incense may cause cancer, Reuters reports. But the study focuses more on home incense, common in Asian cultures, rather than at church, though I suppose that priests might be around incense enough to worry. Earlier this year, researchers said incense might be a mind-altering substance.

After the Olympics

Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Along with the athletes, I feel like I'm still recovering from the Olympics. I'm physically tired from two weeks of staying up too late to watch sports, and my nerves were set on edge watching Nastia and Shawn perfectly perform stunts on that precarious balance beam. And how about shows put on by the Chinese--both athletically and artistically.

Seeing life from a petri dish . . .

Wednesday, August 27, 2008
The idea that the fastest route to new therapies based on stem cell research must run through the use of embryonic material took another hit with yet another recent advancement in research using differenciated or "adult" cells at Harvard.

Biden and the bishops?

Tuesday, August 26, 2008
So it's official: Obama picked a Catholic. Well, he picked a Senator that can burnish his foreign policy credentials, but Biden's Catholicism has to be considered a factor in the mix. Not only is Biden Catholic, he is a regular Sunday communicant at two parishes, despite his consistent pro-abortion voting record.

God bless our gold--money and metals

Thursday, August 21, 2008
Here's an interesting poll from NBC: Should "In God we trust" be taken off the currency?I'm not sure why they are asking it, but with all this Olympic Patriotism going about, it makes you wonder about God and state. Signs from God

Tuesday, August 19, 2008
The pope's comments about driving aside, maybe it'd be good to have some road signs reminding us of how to be good, moral Christians. Artist Deborah Grumet has created just that: posters of the 10 Commandments illustrated with "road signs." I'm not sure I understand the sign for "keep holy the Sabbath"--do watch TV to keep it holy?

For God's sake, SLOW DOWN!

Tuesday, August 19, 2008
One day it's racism, the next it's road rage. Perhaps Pope Benedict has an alphabetical list of modern issues that he feels he must address. But in all seriousness, Pope Benedict does make a good point.

Church trip

Thursday, August 14, 2008
August is beach time, but that doesn’t mean taking a vacation from God. At a couple of Italian vacation spots, beach-goers can visit an inflatable church or a beach-convent, Reuters reports. The blow-up church features people singing religious music, night-time activities until 1 a.m. (not Mass), and priests ready to take Confession.

Georgia, no peace I've found

Tuesday, August 12, 2008
It's a difficult spectacle to watch, the U.S. President gamely attempting to scold the Soviets, I mean, the Russians, for violating a neighboring nation's sovereignty with an unwarranted military invasion. But if the Prez can keep a straight face . . . What's happening to civilians in South Ossetia and Georgia continues 20th century style total war-making.
